CDCP – Receive Dental Benefits Through the Canadian Dental Care Plan

by Dr. Natalie Archer

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan, CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan helps ease the financial burden of oral health care. The CDCP seeks to provide dental insurance to any and all Canadians without private insurance, and with a family income of less than $90,000 per year, with copayments increasing as annual income goes above $70,000. If you do not have a dental plan, you may be eligible to receive benefits which can help you and your family secure optimal dental care in Canada.

How To Check If You Qualify For CDCP?

To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you must meet all the eligibility criteria. These are:

  • You don’t have access to dental insurance
  • You have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  • You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • You have filed your tax return in the previous year

If you have dental coverage, but the coverage is through a provincial, territorial or federal government social program, you may still be eligible for CDCP.

If you meet all the eligibility criteria, your coverage will be coordinated between the plans to ensure there are no duplication or gaps in coverage.

CDCP Benefits for Children Under 12

If you have a child under the age of twelve, you may already be eligible for the Canada Dental Benefit.

Do you want to check the status of your application?

You can check the status of your own, or your dependent’s CDCP application (new applicants or renewal) using the status checker tool on the Service Canada website. You will need to provide the following information for each person you are checking the status for:

  1. application code or client number: which is the number you received after applying, or the number in the right-hand corner of the CDCP letter (determination letter or renewal letter) you received from Service Canada.
  2. Social Insurance Number (SIN): for children’s application that do not have a SIN, you will need to enter their full name and date of birth.

Canadian Dental Care Plan T4 Reporting, CDCP & Taxes

The video above shows the reporting requirements for the T4 and T4A as it pertains to CDCP and reporting codes for box 45 and box 15 in support of the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which helps make oral health care more affordable to eligible Canadians who do not have access to dental insurance. The Dental Care Measures Act came into effect in June 2023.
